Hello, my name is Teryn and I have polycystic ovary syndrome, also known as PCOS. This condition prevents me from ovulating correctly and causes abnormal cycles. My husband and I started trying to start our family a year ago and were unsuccessful. After 6 months, I went into my OBGYNs office to ensure everything was okay. That is when I got the diagnosis of PCOS. We were devastated because I hadn’t even ovulated the 6 months we were trying. It felt like 6 months of wasted time. My OBGYN gave me hope that I most likely just need some medication to induce ovulation. I did 5 rounds of this medication and each round I ovulated. YAY!

After 5 months of the medication, and not getting pregnant, my doctor referred us to a fertility specialist. They did lots of blood work on us both, genetic screening and ultrasounds and found everything to be normal. My husband also did a semen analysis and unfortunately, it came back with zero sperm.

We thought we had felt heartbreak the past year but this was unlike anything we felt. We had to face the reality of not having biological children and also having our only opinion be IVF. After more blood work on my husband, it was concluded that he is in fact producing sperm, but is a carrier for a genetic disease that caused a mutation in his male reproductive system. This mutation means his sperm cannot travel out the way they are supposed to. Although we were hoping for a faulty semen analysis and a miracle, at least this diagnosis gave us a clear picture of what starting our family looks like.

IVF is now our only way to ever have children. We have completed one cycle of IVF which resulted in only 2 embryos which both came back abnormal. We now have to completely start over and that also comes with the price tag of another round of IVF, which is $17,000. We have been on a path of heartbreak over and over and living in a current state of grief as we try to navigate our way through this.
